Hmm, I still haven't figure out the use of those 2nd type like shades of grey form of opacity.. any example?

Not entirely sure what you mean. The amount of gray in the opacity determines it's alpha value (aka transparency).

Play around with the blend setting in create mode. That should enable transparency.
